ONELESS / COLOR

Hex to RGB

A HEX code is compact, but sometimes a stylesheet, slide editor or design brief asks for separate red, green and blue values. Hex to RGB opens that code into its channels while keeping the same color in view. Paste a short or full HEX value, then copy the RGB or RGBA result.

Open Hex to RGB. JavaScript powers the workspace; the full guide is available below.

UNDERSTAND THE RESULT

Color, with a little context.

Read each pair as a channel

In #336699, 33, 66 and 99 are hexadecimal byte values: 51 red, 102 green and 153 blue. Three-digit #369 repeats each digit to produce the same color. An optional fourth pair carries alpha.

Alpha remains separate

Opacity is preserved instead of being blended into white. RGB and HSL functions include alpha below full opacity; HEX uses an extra byte. The checkerboard is only a preview aid. HEX rounds to 8-bit channels; RGB/HSL output keeps three decimal places and alpha up to four.

Invalid input stays visible

Malformed or out-of-range values show an error and disable copying. The tool does not silently clamp channel values or reinterpret a different input format. Use Color Converter when you want automatic format selection.

HOW TO USE IT

From a starting point to a usable result.

  1. Paste a HEX code with 3, 4, 6 or 8 digits. The leading # is optional.
  2. Look at the preview and the labeled channel values. Alpha in the source remains part of the result.
  3. Copy RGB for the complete result, or use the channel cards for individual values. Reset restores the worked example.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

HEX to RGB, with known values

#336699 converts to rgb(51, 102, 153). With half opacity, the result includes alpha rather than a white background. The preview is the exported 8-bit HEX appearance; small rounding differences are normal for fractional channels.

EVERYDAY USES

Make the next small decision easier.

Fill an RGB-only field

When another app expects separate channel numbers, copy Red, Green and Blue from the result cards. If that app has no opacity input, check whether your original HEX included alpha.

Check a handoff value

Compare the visible color with the source before copying. This conversion describes sRGB values; it does not apply an ICC profile or guarantee an identical appearance across displays.

LOCAL WORKSPACE

Your work stays in this browser.

The tool processes color values locally. It does not upload the input to a processing server or save it in browser storage. Leaving or reloading the page clears the working state. Copying places the selected result on your clipboard; sharing sends only the page address without your working values.

These tools describe sRGB colors. Browser decoding, color management and the display can affect what you see; they are not an ICC proofing workflow or a print-color guarantee. Read the site privacy policy for information about the surrounding website.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

A few useful details.

What does #369 become?

The short form expands to #336699, which is rgb(51, 102, 153). #3698 adds an alpha byte of 88, approximately 0.5333 opacity.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Alpha is retained in RGBA/HSLA or an 8-digit HEX value when below 1. An 8-bit alpha byte and a decimal fraction can differ slightly through rounding.

Can I paste a CSS color name?

This page is specific to its named input format. Use Color Converter for CSS named colors or a mixture of supported formats.

Why did an input show an error?

Check the format, number of channels, units and bounds. RGB values are 0–255 or 0–100%; HSL saturation/lightness are 0–100%; alpha is 0–1 or 0–100%. Contextual CSS expressions and wider color spaces are not supported.

What is #FF8000 in RGB?

It is rgb(255, 128, 0): FF is 255, 80 is 128 and 00 is 0. Each HEX pair supplies one channel.

Does uppercase HEX give a different RGB result?

No. #ff8000 and #FF8000 describe the same channels. Letter case changes the spelling, not the color.

Why are there three RGB channel values?

They represent red, green and blue in that order. For byte-form RGB, each runs from 0 to 255; alpha, when present, describes opacity separately.
