How to Remove Line Breaks from PDF Text Without Losing Paragraphs

You copied a paragraph. You got a stack of broken lines. Here is how to make the text flow again, with the space between your ideas intact.

By OneLess

Open Remove Line Breaks
Keep the thought.
Lose the interruption.

The quick answer

Join the lines. Keep the blank line.

Paste your text into Remove Line Breaks, choose Keep paragraphs, and set Join with → Space. The tool joins lines inside each paragraph and keeps a blank line between paragraphs.

This works when your pasted text already has a blank line between paragraphs. If those gaps were lost during copying, add them first; the tool cannot infer where a new paragraph was intended.

01 / See the difference

Same words. A cleaner place to read them.

This original sample shows the pattern: one line break within a thought, a blank line between thoughts.

Before Copied text
Good notes should help you
return to an idea without
rebuilding the page around it.

Keep the paragraph. Remove
the breaks inside it.

The line endings travel with the words.

After Keep paragraphs + Space
Good notes should help you return to an idea without rebuilding the page around it.

Keep the paragraph. Remove the breaks inside it.

The paragraph break stays in place.

Try this text in the tool, or use a short passage of your own.

A small formatting detour

Why does copied PDF text break like this?

Depending on how a PDF was created, copied text can carry a hard return at the end of each displayed line. Your editor receives those returns as part of the text, so widening the window does not necessarily make the words flow into a paragraph. Adobe describes this behavior in its note on copied PDF text and reflow.

For ordinary prose, a useful cleanup rule is simple: replace a break inside a sentence with a space, and keep a blank line where one paragraph ends and another begins.

02 / Make the repair

Three steps, then back to your draft.

  1. Paste a short passage first

Open Remove Line Breaks and paste the copied text. Look for a blank line between paragraphs. If there is none, insert one at each intended paragraph boundary before continuing.

  2. Keep paragraphs. Join with a space.

Select Keep paragraphs, then Space under Join with. Turn on Trim edges to remove spaces around each line, and Collapse spaces to reduce repeated spaces and tabs.

Leave Fix hyphens off for the first pass. Check split words separately below.

  3. Review the result and copy it

Check the beginning and end of each paragraph, names, numbers, and words split across lines. Choose Copy, then paste the result into your document. The output is plain text; apply your document’s font and heading styles there.

Choose the result you need

Which setting fits your text?

Keep paragraphs

For prose with blank lines between paragraphs.

A ↵ B ↵↵ C → A B ↵↵ C

To spaces

For a passage that should become one continuous paragraph. Use Space as the separator.

A ↵ B → A B

Join directly

For fragments that must touch, such as a broken code. Ordinary prose usually needs a space.

AB ↵ 123 → AB123

In these examples, ↵ means a line break; ↵↵ means a blank line.

03 / Keep what matters

A few things deserve a second look.

Words split by a hyphen

Fix hyphens can turn exam-↵ple into example. It can also remove a real hyphen from well-↵known. Use it only when that change fits your passage, then check the result.

Lists, poetry, addresses, and code

The line endings may carry meaning. Clean prose separately from these sections, or leave their breaks in place. Joining every line can erase useful structure.

Columns and tables

If copied words arrive in the wrong order, removing line breaks will not reorder them. Try copying a smaller section or one column at a time, then compare it with the original.

Quotations and exact wording

Compare the cleaned passage with the PDF before quoting it. Spacing cleanup does not check spelling, restore missing characters, or verify the text’s accuracy.

Before you go

Two common questions

What if I cannot select any text in the PDF?

An image-only scan may need optical character recognition (OCR) before you can copy its words. A text cleanup tool cannot read the image itself. Adobe’s guide to recognizing text in scanned PDFs explains that separate step.

What if there are still extra spaces or blank lines?

Review the paragraph boundaries first. For further cleanup, use Remove Extra Spaces or Remove Blank Lines. Choose only the changes your text needs; removing every blank line also removes the gaps you just preserved.
